The $2 tape measure that made me rethink every 'restored' table I've sold
Picked up a beat-up workshop bench at an estate sale in Dayton last Saturday, and underneath three layers of paint I found a tape measure glued to the leg with a note that said 'calibrated 1987'. Turns out that old tape was 1/8 inch off over 6 feet, which means every single 'level' project I ever rebuilt using a random yardstick from a bin might be secretly crooked. Has anyone else found hidden calibration marks or weird measurements on garage finds that changed how you trust your own tools?
Man that hits home, I pulled an old framing square out of my grandpa's barn that was a good 1/4 inch off and I'd been using it for years without knowing. Makes you want to throw out every tool you didn't buy new yourself.
