My neighbor swore by planting beans with the moon and I thought it was nuts

My neighbor Frank, who is about 80, gave me a packet of his 'heirloom rattlesnake pole beans' last spring. He handed them over and said, 'You plant these on the third night after the full moon, or they'll just sit there.' I smiled and nodded, thinking it was just an old tale. I planted half the packet on his moon day and the other half a week later when I had free time. The moon-planted beans sprouted in 4 days flat, strong and fast. The others took over two weeks and looked kinda sad. I have to admit, Frank was right, and now I feel a bit silly. Has anyone else had a weird piece of garden advice turn out to be totally true?

Frank's onto something. My grandma always said to plant root crops in the dark of the moon. I tried it with potatoes one year as a joke. The ones I put in during the waning moon were way bigger and easier to dig up. The other batch was just okay. It sounds like folklore but sometimes the old ways just work. I don't question it anymore.

Ever wonder if it's less about the moon and more about the soil temperature at night?

Guess I'll be checking the almanac before planting my tomatoes this year.
