My uncle in Phoenix said he never starts tomatoes from seed anymore, just buys starts. Said it's a waste of time and heat. I've always started from seed, but our last 110F week got me thinking.

Oh man, that heat is no joke. I tried starting peppers from seed here in Tucson last spring and it was a total bust. The seedlings just fried on my patio, even in partial shade. Now I grab a few six-packs from the nursery in April. They’re already sturdy, and I get fruit weeks sooner. Sometimes you just have to work with your climate.

Honestly, it's not that deep. People act like picking a plant at the store is some kind of gardening failure. If it works, it works. My plants from the nursery last year did just fine and I saved a ton of hassle.

Oh, I totally get where Jason_black2 is coming from with that heat, but I still swear by seeds! I start mine indoors under a cheap shop light in late January. By the time it's hot enough to transplant, they're tough little plants that handle our Arizona sun way better than most store-bought ones I've tried.
