A tiny adjustment to my torch angle improved my bubble control.
Holding the flame a bit higher let me shape the glass more evenly.

Try tilting the torch sideways a tiny bit next time. It can help with the thickness on one side of the piece.

Holding the flame higher like you said really improved my bubble control. I tried @daniel511's sideways tilt method and it helped with even heating. Small angle changes are often the solution.
