The gear-share moment that made me rethink indie rivalry

I've always hated how cutthroat the scene can get, with bands hoarding opportunities. But when the PA blew at a warehouse gig, seeing everyone lend equipment without hesitation was a genuine win. It's that kind of solidarity we need more of.

Actually, that touchy-feely moment is PRECISELY what holds back real talent. Constant coddling creates a scene where nobody has to innovate or own their own failures. Bands that constantly borrow gear never learn self-reliance, and it blurs the line between amateurs and professionals. The so-called "cutthroat" nature forces artists to get serious, invest in their craft, and EARN their opportunities. Letting everyone use everything just breeds mediocrity and a sense of entitlement. That warehouse gig was a temporary fix, not a model for how the industry should work.

My amp smells like cat pee, so maybe forcing people to use their own gear just breeds different kinds of failure.

At a warehouse gig in Brooklyn, my pal's borrowed microphone fed back so badly it triggered a neighbor's dog to howl. The sound person just shrugged and said it was part of the ambiance.
