Chatting with my aunt made me dust off my old pressure cooker stories
She told me about her 1987 Presto that hissed like a snake for 12 minutes before she yanked it off the stove, and it hit different because I realized we all have that one gadget we swear we'll master someday, so has anyone else gone back to a cooker they abandoned for years after hearing someone else's fail?
I used to figure those old cookers were just yard sale junk once they started acting up, like why bother when you can get a new one for forty bucks. Then my neighbor told me about her mom's old Mirro that sat in a closet for like fifteen years and she finally dragged it out last winter and now she makes beans in it every single week. That kind of flipped it for me, because half the problem is just being scared of the thing, and hearing someone else admit theirs hissed and scared them too makes it feel less like you're the only one who messed it up. So yeah, I went and dug out the one my ex left behind, new gasket and all, and it works fine. Turns out most of those old cookers just need a cheap ring and somebody to tell you it's normal to be nervous.
