Zone focusing misses the point when you stop down anyway

I watched a guy at a photo walk in Austin crank his 50mm to f16 and then still fiddle with the rangefinder patch for ten seconds before every shot. At f16 on a 50mm, everything from six feet to infinity is sharp, so why bother with exact focus at all? Is zone focusing really just a crutch for people who never learned to trust hyperfocal distance?
