Took me 3 weeks to realize the basement light was on a switch behind the water heater
Moved into a place in Columbus last month and the basement was just pitch black. I bought a $25 work light and used it for 2 weeks before my buddy came over and started laughing, pointed behind the water heater, and there was this dusty old toggle switch. Landlord never mentioned it, lease said nothing, and the walkthrough was done at noon so we never even tried the light. Has anyone else found mystery switches or fixtures that the landlord just forgot existed?

Figured out pretty quick after moving into my last place that landlords just forget stuff exists. There was an outlet in the hallway that only worked when you flipped a switch in the coat closet, and it took me a solid week of thinking the outlet was dead. Same deal with the outdoor spigot that had its own shutoff valve hidden under the kitchen sink. I feel like this is just how old houses work, stuff gets added over the years and nobody writes it down, then new people move in and just live around the mystery. My rule now is any time something doesn't work, I walk the whole place flipping every switch and checking every panel before I spend a dime on a fix.
