Denim patch piles look messy, but I prefer them over cutting up good jeans

I see everyone on here slicing up old Levi's into perfect little squares for quilts and bags. I tried that last March with a pair from the donation bin and honestly, the straight edges made it look like store bought craft supplies. I actually like leaving the hems and pockets attached when I patch my work jacket, even if the pile of fabric scraps in my corner looks chaotic. My wife said it looks like a hoarder station, but I told her the uneven layers tell a story about each wear spot. That jacket has 14 patches now and every single one has a raw edge or a seam that doesn't match. Has anyone else kept their denim salvage rough instead of trimming everything down to tidy pieces?
