PSA: Marking two years with a composting toilet and my controversial take on convenience
I finally reached the point where maintaining my composting toilet feels effortless, a quiet victory after some initial hurdles. This system has drastically reduced my water usage and simplified my utility setup. I know most people would argue that traditional plumbing is non-negotiable for comfort, but I genuinely find this method more hygienic and satisfying. The routine connects me directly to the cycle of waste and resource, which aligns perfectly with my tiny house ethos. It’s a small, daily practice that has reshaped my entire perspective on what modern living requires.

Reading your post, I'm nodding along because our paths sound so similar. Getting past that initial learning curve with the composting toilet was a game-changer, wasn't it? My backyard setup has me marveling at how quickly kitchen scraps integrate with the compost. After two years, the routine feels second nature, and I can't imagine going back to water-intensive alternatives.

Was the convenience debate harder to get past than the actual maintenance?

After six months with our composting toilet in the cabin, the mental hurdle of 'is this going to be gross?' was way worse than the actual upkeep. Emptying the solid bin every few weeks is straightforward (honestly, less offensive than taking out the kitchen trash sometimes). We use shredded newspaper and sawdust, and the compost pile out back transforms it all so quickly. Now, the idea of using a gallon of water just to flush feels bizarrely wasteful. That initial convenience debate totally dominated our conversations before the install, but the routine itself is dead simple.
