Neighborhood aesthetics boards are killing the spirit of practical urban gardening.

In my area, the homeowners' association has started enforcing strict guidelines on how vegetable gardens should look. I find this completely counterproductive to the essence of urban gardening. For instance, they're requiring raised beds to be painted in neutral colors and banning certain 'unsightly' plants like sprawling squash vines. This prioritizes curb appeal over food production and biodiversity. Urban gardens should be functional, messy ecosystems, not sterile decorations. We need to push back against these rules that stifle creativity and sustainability. Let's focus on growing food, not conforming to arbitrary aesthetic standards.

Community boards frequently exercise CONTROL that feels more about power than actual neighborhood improvement. @verah38's experience highlights how these decisions can be deeply PERSONAL and unnecessarily destructive. We lose so much local CHARACTER and individual expression to blanket rules like this.

Squash vines can be trellised neatly.
