Heard a guy at the Phoenix library say his AI tool labels his 4,000 old family photos, so I gave it a shot
I was sitting near the computers at the Phoenix library last Tuesday and this older guy was telling the librarian how he got an AI tool to go through 4,000 old family photos and tag who was in them without typing a single name. I asked him what he used and he said it was a free tool that learns faces from just a few examples you click on first. I went home and loaded about 300 scanned photos from my parents' albums and it took maybe 20 minutes to sort them into folders by person. It got my grandma right almost every time, but it kept mixing up my two cousins who look alike, so I had to fix around 40 of them by hand. The part that surprised me is it also guessed the decade from stuff like clothes and cars, which was close enough to be useful. Has anyone else tried face sorting on old scans, and did yours struggle with similar-looking family members too?
My aunt tried something like this with her wedding scans and it kept tagging her sister as the bride, which caused a whole thing at Thanksgiving. What got me was how it nailed the year range just from hairstyles alone, like it somehow knows a mullet means 1983. Old photos are weird like that, the small stuff gives away more than the faces do.
