I ran a test for 3 days comparing a general AI model to a fine-tuned one for summarizing legal documents.
Honestly, the fine-tuned model was way better because it actually understood the legal terms and didn't just pull random sentences, so has anyone else seen a big jump in quality when you use a specialized model for a specific job?

But is the difference really that big if you're just summarizing? I feel like a general model could get close enough for most people's needs without the extra work.

Depends on what you're summarizing, @linda_clark. In my experience, a general model will flatten things. Try summarizing a tricky news article about a debate. A fine-tuned one might catch that a politician's "review" of a policy is actually a rejection. A general summary often just says they talked about it, missing the real point. For quick notes, sure, general is fine. But if the details matter, that's where the extra work pays off.

Yeah I saw a breakdown where the fine-tuned summaries caught way more nuance, @linda_clark. The general ones kept missing key points.
