Just had a chat with a retired dev who changed how I see AI training data

He told me he spends his weekends labeling edge cases for a medical imaging model, just because he thinks the AI needs to see the weird stuff. It made me realize how much unpaid expertise is shaping these tools behind the scenes... has anyone else met someone quietly contributing to a model?

Saw a similar story on a tech podcast where a retired librarian was tagging old photos for an environmental project. Made me realize there's a whole hidden workforce of people doing this just for the love of it. Really changes how you think about where the smarts in these models actually come from.

Wow, that's so true. I feel personally attacked by this. My whole life I've been telling people I'm "obsessed with organizing things" but really I was just training their future AI overlords for free. It's almost embarrassing. I've got a whole hard drive of labeled cat photos I did for a wildlife study back in 2013, no pay, just pure love of the work. Now every time my phone guesses the right breed of a dog I feel a little weird about it. Like, oh great, my unpaid labor just helped a billion-dollar company. But hey, at least I can say I'm part of the reason Siri knows what a Golden Retriever looks like, even if she still can't find my keys
