My neighbor's 2 AM salmon trick fixed my soggy fries problem

Last Tuesday I was preheating my air fryer at midnight because I couldn't sleep and my neighbor knocked on the wall. She came over holding a basket of salmon and said she always does a 10 minute dry run with bread slices first. I thought she was nuts, but she showed me how the bread soaks up all the leftover moisture in the basket. Next day I fried my frozen fries at 380 for 14 minutes and they came out CRUNCHY for the first time ever. I've been air frying for 3 years and never once thought about pre-drying the unit. She also told me to stop overcrowding the basket, which I knew but ignored. Has anyone else tried the bread trick, or do you have a different way to get that first batch crispy? I'm curious if it works with tater tots too.
