Why does nobody talk about preheating an air fryer with nothing in it

I burned three batches of fries before I noticed the recipe said to preheat first, and now I always run it empty for 3 minutes before adding food, has anyone else missed this step?

Honestly, that's basically just seasoning the air fryer like a cast iron skillet.

Not really that deep lol. It's an air fryer, not some heirloom cast iron your grandma handed down.
