Can we talk about that anime convention panel in Chicago that changed my watch list?

I was at Anime Central in Chicago back in May. I sat in on a panel about lesser known slice of life series from the 90s. The host mentioned this show called "Yokohama Shopping Log" and I had never heard of it. I watched the first three episodes that night in my hotel room. Now I track down old OVAs from that era instead of chasing the newest seasonal hits. Has anyone else discovered a hidden gem from a convention panel like that?

Bro that panel sounds awesome. I had a similar thing at a con a few years back where someone mentioned "Haibane Renmei" on a whim and now I'm digging through all these obscure OVAs nobody talks about. It's wild how one random panel can totally flip your whole taste like that.

That's the thing I love about these random con recommendations, they hit different than stuff you find through algorithms or whatever. It's like how I'll be at the grocery store and overhear someone talking about a weird documentary on some streaming service, and suddenly I'm down a rabbit hole for weeks. idk, maybe it's just me but there's something about those offhand human suggestions that feels more genuine, like you're tapping into someone's actual excitement rather than a corporate recommendation engine. It's funny how the most random encounters can shape your taste way more than all that targeted stuff does.
