Hot take: dub vs sub arguments are mostly about habit, not quality

I used to swear by subs for everything, thought dubs were always trash... then I watched Cowboy Bebop dubbed on a whim last month. The voice acting actually fit the characters better for me, especially Spike's laid back tone. Now I'm going back and trying dubs for shows I wrote off before, and it's wild how much preference is just what you're used to. Has anyone else flipped sides on this after giving the other a real chance?

Try giving Steins;Gate a shot dubbed if you haven't already. I was a hardcore sub loyalist for years until my brother basically FORCED me to watch the English cast for that show, and Okabe's mad scientist rants hit SO much harder in English. The trick is picking dubs where the localization team actually put in the work to match lip flaps while keeping the original intent, not just hastily translated nonsense. Start with shows that have a reputation for good dubs instead of trying to force yourself through a bad one, it makes the switch way less painful.

Oh man, I had the exact same thing happen with Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex! I watched it subbed first and liked it well enough, but a friend made me try the dub and it completely changed the vibe. The English actors brought this snarky, cynical energy to the team banter that felt way more natural than what I was used to. It really made me realize how much I was just sticking with what felt comfortable instead of what actually sounded better.
