That one stranger at Anime Expo who changed how I watch subbed shows

Last year at Anime Expo in LA, I was complaining to a cosplayer about missing dialogue because I read subtitles too slow, and she just said, "Try watching with your ears first, then your eyes will catch up." She explained she'd been deaf in one ear since birth and trained herself to ignore subs until a scene confused her, then glance down. Has anyone else had that moment where a random fan's tip just rewired your whole viewing habit overnight?

That exact thing happened to me with a fansub of Gintama, I kept pausing every two seconds until a friend told me to just let it roll and check subs when I got lost. Now I catch way more jokes because I'm actually hearing the delivery first.
