Took 3 weeks to realize the subs were the problem, not the fans

I was rewatching an old mecha show from the 90s and kept getting lost on who was talking to who. I blamed the show's pacing for like 7 episodes, rewound a bunch of times, even thought my TV was lagging. Turns out my player had two subtitle tracks and I was on the one with machine-translated dialog that butchered every character's name. Swapped to the proper fansub file and suddenly the whole plot clicked in 10 minutes. Has anyone else wasted a whole evening on a bad subtitle file before catching it?
