Finally got a client to stop using those red plastic tree ties

They were girdling a mature oak in their yard, and I showed them the bark damage from the last two years. Anyone else have a go-to method for explaining why proper staking matters?

Ever notice how people just forget stuff is tied up out there? Honestly, I see it all the time with those cheap holiday light clips left on shrubs. They just bake into the stem after a season.

Honestly it's the same mindset as people who leave the plastic wrap on new electronics. They think it's protective forever, but it just ends up trapping heat and gunk. That temporary thing becomes a permanent problem because nobody goes back to check.

Yeah, it's like what @eva_owens said... people just set it and forget it. I've seen those plastic ties cut so deep you can barely get a knife blade under them. I always tell folks to picture wearing a belt two sizes too small for years... the tree just can't grow right.
