Had a 30 year old climbing line snap on me last Tuesday, about 15 feet up a sugar maple.

That rope lasted three decades, which is way past what anyone expects from gear. Most lines are rated for a ten year service life if you're lucky. Sounds like it gave you plenty of warning and held up longer than it should have. What were you expecting from equipment that old?
