Had a 50-foot oak limb come down on my truck last Tuesday and everyone says I should have cabling installed but I think it just missed the warning signs.

The tree looked fine from the ground with no cracks or rot at the union, so how's a cable supposed to predict a random gust at 3am anyway, has anyone else had a failure that didn't match what the textbooks say?

Tbh that tree probably had a grudge against your truck from the start. Cabling is like putting a Band-Aid on a broken leg, it might hold for a while but when that 3am gust shows up you're still screwed. I had a maple drop a limb right onto my mailbox last spring, no cracks, no rot, textbook perfect union, just decided to give up at 2pm on a sunny Tuesday like a drama queen. Ngl sometimes trees just do what they want and all the cables in the world won't change that.

Are we really acting like cabling is completely useless now? I've seen it save some pretty rough splits on old oaks that've been holding up fine for years after. Yeah trees can be unpredictable but that doesn't mean every support system is automatically gonna fail.
