I was sure a big stump grinder was the only way to go until a job in Savannah
We had this huge oak stump in a tight backyard, maybe 4 feet across, and I brought in the big machine like always. The homeowner asked if we could try a smaller hand grinder first to save her garden beds, so I agreed just to be nice. After two hours with the smaller tool, we got it down below grade without touching a single azalea, and it cost her half as much. Now I start every estimate by checking if a smaller tool can do the job, even if it takes a bit longer. How many of you have switched to a lighter tool for the right spot?

Yeah totally, I did the same thing with a big pine stump last month and it saved my customer's whole brick patio lol.

Smaller grinders saved my client's flower beds too.

Totally agree with you @abby_king22. I switched to a smaller grinder last season for a tight backyard job. The big machine would have torn up the whole border, but the little one just nibbled at the roots. Made cleanup way easier too.
