Just learned that sycamore bark peeling is actually a growth adaptation

Was reading an old arborist textbook from 1984 my mentor gave me, and apparently that peeling helps the tree get rid of moss and lichen without spending energy fighting them off. Has anyone else noticed sycamores stay cleaner than oaks in humid areas?

Noticed the same thing with the sycamores by my creek, they always look so much cleaner than the oaks!

Buddy of mine once planted a sycamore near his pond and said the leaves just slid off in the rain like they were waxed, never had to rake a thing. Meanwhile his oaks dropped enough acorns to trip a horse, total mess.
