Just wasted $75 on a 'universal' tree root barrier that my local clay soil ate through in a single season...
I was so sure it would save me time on a big silver maple removal in the spring, but now I'm back to square one and the client is annoyed about the new surface roots.

Ugh, that's the worst. I had the same thing happen with a willow. For clay, you HAVE to go deep, like 30 inches minimum, with a gravel and sand mix. Then cap it with a concrete curb. It's a ton of work but it's the only thing that holds.

Skip the plastic barriers in heavy clay. That stuff just heaves and cracks them apart. You need a deep trench filled with gravel, which is a pain but actually works.
