My climbing rope hit the 5-year mark and I'm a bit nervous about it
I was doing my gear check this morning and saw the date on my Sterling HTP rope. It's been with me since I started my business in Charlotte. The manual says to think about retiring it after 5 years, even with light use. Has anyone kept using a rope past that point if it still looks and feels good?

Man, that's your life on the line though.

Wait, hold on. You're telling me they only gave you one chance to get it right? That's insane. Like, my cousin's job has a three-strike system for safety stuff. One shot and you're done? That's a lot of pressure for a simple mistake.

But what if the single chance wasn't about the mistake itself, but about proving you can handle the pressure? Like, you could have a perfect rope that's been used twice, but if you freeze up or panic during that one inspection, they'd rather cut ties with you than risk you having a bad reaction when something actually goes wrong. It's brutal but maybe they're filtering for mental toughness, not just physical safety. The whole one-strike thing could be about weeding out people who can't stay calm, not just people who mess up.

Honestly, if you're already feeling nervous about it, just retire the rope. That little voice in your head is there for a reason. Your life is literally hanging off that thing, why take the chance? Ngl, I've seen ropes hold way past their date but also seen them fail in sketchy ways. Spend the money, get a new one, and sleep better at night.
