Rant: neighbor tried to 'prune' their maple with a chainsaw from the ground

Came home last week to find my neighbor hacking away at a big Norway maple on their property line. They were cutting branches way too big and leaving stubs that are gonna rot right into the trunk. I told them they should hire a climber with proper cuts, but they said 'it's fine, I've done this for years.' Anyone else deal with homeowners making hack cuts that ruin the tree's structure for good?

People get pretty worked up about trees but a Norway maple isn't exactly a rare heirloom. If it's on their property line and they've been hacking at it for years, it's probably still standing.

Funny you mention hacking at it... I once tried to "prune" a maple in my yard and ended up taking out a whole branch that landed on my neighbor's shed. Tree looked like it had been in a bar fight after I was done with it. That thing's probably still standing because it's embarrassed to be seen with me as its caretaker...
