Realized my climbing line was getting chewed up way too fast in the oaks around Portland

Tbh, a guy at a gear swap pointed out I was running it over a sharp branch stub every single ascent. Anyone got a better method for checking your path before you commit?

Classic Portland oak move, they're out to get your gear! Maybe try a quick visual sweep from the ground like you're looking for a missing contact lens. My partner yells "clear" like we're handling explosives, which seems a bit much but gets the job done. That gear swap guy just saved you a fortune in new ropes.

My old partner used a laser pointer to check for gear snags from the ground. That visual sweep trick saved us a few times at Smith Rock.

That visual sweep trick is a lifesaver, honestly.
