Saved a 90 year old oak in Austin yesterday, felt amazing

Got a call about this massive live oak in someone's backyard that had a huge crack running up the main trunk. The homeowner was ready to cut it down, but I spent the afternoon doing some cabling and bracing work on it. Used a combination of dynamic and static cables to stabilize the split, and honestly it came out cleaner than I expected. The owner was so relieved he offered to pay me double my usual rate. Anyone else have a tree they saved that just felt really good?

Doubt that tree is going to last more than a few years with that kind of crack, but hey, you got paid double so who cares right? Cabling can only do so much when the trunk is already split. Honestly feels like you're just delaying the inevitable, but at least the homeowner got some peace of mind.

Right there with you, I had a client last year pay me to cable a split oak and it was a total band-aid. Thing looked exactly the same after a big storm, just a waste of everyone's time and money.
