Spent 4 hours trying to rope a 60-foot oak yesterday before giving up and renting a lift
Borrowed my neighbor's fancy throw line setup and still couldn't get a single branch to cooperate, what do you guys use for tall trees with no good crotches to aim at?

Well that's the problem right there, 60 feet is a lot of rope to be messing with on a ladder. Did you try a weighted bag on a monofilament line first, or just go straight for the throw line?

Ditch the ladder entirely for that first step. I mean, even with a weighted bag, trying to toss 60 feet of rope from a ladder sounds sketchy. You'd be way better off using a throw line with a small bag, get it over the branch first, then pull your climbing line after. It's just safer and way less fumbling around up there. Once you've got that line set, then you can mess with the ladder for access if you really need it.
