Surprised by how much weight a single oak limb can carry
I was reading through an old extension service bulletin last week, the one from Penn State about tree hazards, and it said a mature oak limb can hold over 2,000 pounds of snow before it gives. That number threw me because I always figured the branch would break much sooner with that kind of load. It makes me wonder about all the pruning decisions I make in winter, especially in my clients' yards here in Erie. Has anyone else seen those weight tables and adjusted how they estimate risk on big deciduous trees?

Yeah, that snow load number matches what I've seen on big oaks here.
