TIL that copper nails for killing a tree stump actually work

I hammered in a dozen 3-inch nails into an old maple stump last fall, and the whole thing's punky and falling apart now. Anyone have a guess on how long it takes for the roots to fully break down?

Roots? That stump's basically compost now.

Forget the roots, listen to @lisar14. That stump is already gone. The copper just speeds up the rot that was already happening. Once it's punky like that, the roots are basically done for. Give it another season and you won't find anything solid left. It's wild how well that old trick works, lol.
