My coworker swore I was wasting time filing receipts by date, so I tried his way for a month
Honestly, I got told by this guy Dave in accounting that sorting receipts by vendor was way faster than by date. He said date sorting was for "old school" people and I'd save like 2 hours a week. So I switched to vendor sorting for a whole month back in September. Ended up spending triple the time hunting for specific transactions when I needed them for expense reports. My quarterly report took me 5 hours longer than usual because I kept flipping between piles. Has anyone else had someone's efficiency tip totally backfire on them?

My buddy Mark tried the same thing but with sorting by check number instead of date. He was so proud of his system until he had to find a specific transaction from three months ago and spent an entire afternoon going through a stack of checks that weren't even in order because he'd grab them out of the book randomly. The worst part was his boss asked for a breakdown by month for a client meeting and Mark had to manually sort everything again by hand, which took him like four hours.

Wait, didn't Mark ever hear about a little thing called a spreadsheet...? I mean, sorting checks by hand in 2024 is like churning your own butter, you're just making extra work for yourself. That whole "grab them out of the book randomly" bit is the real killer though, not even sticking to his own system. And then having to redo it all by month for his boss... ouch, that's the kind of mistake that haunts you during a performance review. Honestly, sounds like Mark needed a few hours of quiet reflection and maybe a calculator, not a better sorting method.
