Old paper map beat my phone in the Adirondacks last month

Took a day hike near Lake Placid and my phone's GPS kept dropping every time we hit a valley. Pulled out a $7 paper map I grabbed from the ranger station and within 5 minutes found a trail shortcut that saved us about 2 hours. The map had markings for old logging paths that no app even lists. Has anyone else switched back to paper for certain areas or am I just becoming my dad?

Trust the paper for the logging roads but question whether those old paths are still passable or if they hit private land these days. That's the kind of thing that can turn a shortcut into a trespassing problem real fast. I've seen old maps send people down roads that are now gated or posted with no-trespassing signs. Did you check the current land ownership before you took that trail? Cause that's the one area where paper can lead you into a mess the phone would've caught.
