The day I found out I'd been seasoning cast iron wrong for 12 years

My buddy from Austin watched me scrub my skillet with soap and water and just stared at me until it clicked. Turns out all that flaking and rust I blamed on humidity was actually me stripping the seasoning every single week. Has anyone else had that moment where a friend's silence told you more than a lecture ever could?

Why is it we spend years doing things wrong till one quiet look makes us see the whole pattern?

My buddy's silence was basically the cast iron version of a interventions, except instead of cocaine it was me murdering a pan every Sunday. I thought the soap was fine because it said "gentle" on the bottle, so I'd scrub away all that dark goodness and wonder why my eggs tasted like regret. Worst part is I bragged about my "rustic" cooking style for years, turns out that was just me serving flakes of iron in my hash browns. Now my skillet sits in the corner looking at me like I betrayed it, and honestly, I kinda did.
