Guy at a Columbus trade show told me to charge by the sq ft and not the hour, doubled my quotes that month
I was at a flooring trade show in Columbus back in March and got stuck talking to this older installer who ran a crew of 6. I mentioned I was still billing hourly and he said flat out, "you're selling time, not floors, so you'll always lose." He pulled out his phone and showed me a quote he sent that morning, $4,200 for 1,800 sq ft, and said he never even mentions hours to clients anymore. I switched my whole pricing sheet that weekend and closed 3 jobs the next week at numbers I would've been scared to say out loud before. Anyone else made the hourly to flat rate jump and had it backfire on a tough job?
