My cofounder pitched a $12k webinar funnel at a diner in Austin and I killed it halfway through his slides
We were at a booth at Magnolia Cafe on a Tuesday night and he had the whole deck printed out, 40 slides on webinar funnels and paid ads. I stopped him at slide 12 and asked how many of our last 30 demos came from webinars. Zero. I made him pull up our Intercom log right there and 22 of them came from my cold LinkedIn DMs to ops managers at companies with 50 to 200 people. How are you all tracking which channel actually brings the demos, because I feel like I've been flying blind on attribution.
My buddy ran into this same thing last year, except he was the cofounder getting shut down. His partner stopped him mid pitch and asked the same question about where the last 30 deals came from. Turned out almost all of them came from a Slack group his partner was in and nobody had ever written it down. They started keeping a simple note on every demo in the CRM, just one line about where the person came from. Six months later they found out half their paid ads were feeding leads that never booked anything. That log also showed the stuff they almost cut, like his partner's annoying habit of commenting in that Slack group, was doing all the work. You don't need fancy attribution software, you need one field you actually fill in every time.
