Spent $2k on a cold email tool that promised personalized AI sequences - got better results from a simple spreadsheet and manual follow-ups instead
The AI tool sent 500 emails and got 2 replies, but my manual approach with 50 hand-researched prospects landed 4 calls in a week, so is the tech actually a shortcut or just another thing we buy to avoid doing the real work ourselves

Honestly, have you noticed how these tools make the hard part feel easier but skip the work that actually matters? Tbh, that hand-researched list beat the AI because you did the thinking upfront instead of letting software guess. Ngl, good outreach is just research plus a personal touch, and no amount of automation replaces that.

But that manual list only worked because you spent hours digging for those specific 50 names, and if you scale that same effort to 500 it stops being practical. @felix_coleman87 says the tool skipped the real work, but tools are supposed to handle the repetitive stuff so you can focus on the high value research part. Sure your 50 hand picked prospects got 4 calls, but that success rate means you still had to find and vet those people yourself which the tool should have been doing part of. The problem isn't the tech it's that people expect a "set it and forget it" result when cold outreach has always been about volume plus targeting. Cold email tools are just amplifiers, they make bad lists bad faster and good lists good faster. You got 2 replies from 500 because you probably let the AI pick the prospects instead of doing that part yourself.
