A vendor told me their 99.9% uptime SLA was basically useless

Last year I was shopping for a cloud hosting provider for our small logistics firm and a sales rep at a conference in Chicago flat out said their 99.9% SLA is just marketing fluff. He explained that the fine print lets them exclude scheduled maintenance and 'force majeure' events, which covers almost any real outage. Sure enough, when we signed up with another company and had a 4 hour outage last quarter, the credit was only $12. Has anyone else found that SLA guarantees are rarely worth the paper they're written on?

Wait, have you tried actually reading the fine print while doing a handstand? Because maybe that makes the $12 credit seem like more of a win? I swear reading those SLAs feels like trying to decipher a phone contract written by a drunk lawyer on his day off. The math never works out either - $12 for four hours of downtime is basically them saying "here's some pocket change, now stop complaining.

Yeah fine print always wins in the end, just like with cell phone plans.
