That one sales rep who actually told me not to buy their product

Back in March I was checking out a new CRM for my small team and this rep named Sarah at HubSpot straight up told me their $50/user plan would be overkill for what I needed. She pointed me to a free tier that did 80% of the stuff I wanted. Has anyone else had a vendor talk you out of spending money?

My old mechanic did this to me once. Told me I didn't need the full brake job they offered and just needed pads. Saved me like $400 right there. Came back to him for everything after that. It's true what the other person said about it being a long term play, but in my book a sales rep saving you real money upfront is still a solid move. You remember the ones who helped you out, not the ones who pushed the expensive package.

Gonna be real with you, that's a cool story but I don't think it's that deep. Lots of sales people do stuff like that to build trust and get you to come back later when you grow. It's just a tactic, not some pure act of honesty. They probably figured you'd leave a good review or tell people like you're doing now. Plus the free tier locks you into their system and makes it harder to switch later. Wouldn't call it a favor, more like a long term play.
