Update: Was dead set against outsourcing HR, then the September payroll mess happened

I ran a small manufacturing crew in Toledo for 8 years and always handled payroll myself. Last month I double-taxed three guys on overtime and spent 18 hours fixing it with the IRS. Has anyone else had a subcontractor save them from their own stubbornness?

I remember reading something about how payroll mistakes cost small businesses way more than outsourcing fees, especially when you factor in the time spent fixing them. That double-taxing thing sounds like a nightmare, I had a buddy who ran a crew in Cleveland and he switched after a similar mess with workers comp. Takes a lot to admit you need help with something you've been doing for years, but sometimes the money you save in stress alone is worth it.

Paid a bookkeeper $200 a month and never looked back.
