Honestly it took a sad little cherry tomato to show me I was drowning my plants
Back when I started my balcony setup in Chicago, I watered every single morning because it felt like the right thing to do. Then last June my cherry tomato plant dropped all its flowers and the leaves went yellow, and I kept telling myself it was just the heat. A guy at the garden center on Lawrence Ave poked the soil and told me it was soaked three inches down, and that I was basically loving it to death. I cut back to watering only when the top inch felt dry, and two weeks later the thing set more fruit than it had all season. Now I'm wondering how many other plants I smothered back then, so how do you all test your soil before grabbing the can?
