Hot take: self watering containers are a waste of money for balcony gardens

I tried those fancy self watering planters last summer on my 4th floor balcony in Chicago. After 3 months of fighting root rot and algae, I went back to basic terracotta pots with saucers. The constant moisture just killed my cherry tomatoes and basil. Maybe I'm doing it wrong, but has anyone else had better luck with regular pots?
