I keep seeing people cram way too many plants into those tiny Ikea balcony boxes and it's a mess waiting to happen

Have you ever tried it though? I packed my little box with basil, chives, and some marigolds last year. They kind of leaned on each other and did fine. It looked full and happy, not messy. Maybe it depends on what you pick.
