I swore herbs were a waste on a balcony until my neighbor in Denver showed me her 4 pots
I used to think growing herbs on a balcony was pointless, mostly because my first two attempts dried up in a week. Then last June my neighbor Carla, who lives one floor down in Denver, waved me over to her railing. She had just 4 pots going, basil, mint, chives, and parsley, and she said the trick was picking a spot that gets morning sun only, since afternoon heat here cooks them. She also told me to water until it runs out the bottom instead of giving a little sip each day, which I had been doing wrong the entire time. I switched my setup over in July and my basil has been going strong for 5 months now, even with the cold nights coming. So what is everyone using for winter, do you bring the pots inside or just let them go and start over in spring?
Bringing them in is the move if you have any south facing window at all. My mint and chives survive fine inside, they just look sad and leggy by February but they come back once it warms up. Basil is the diva of the group, it hates the cold and it hates being inside too, so honestly I just let that one go and start new seeds in March. Parsley will hang on forever if you let it, that stuff is basically a weed. Good call on the morning sun thing too, my afternoon spot fried everything until I figured that out.
