I used to think those little fabric grow bags were a waste of money.

For years, I stuck with plastic pots because they were cheap and lasted. Last spring, I bought a 5-gallon fabric bag on a whim for a tomato plant, just to see. The plant grew twice as big as the ones in my hard pots, and the roots looked so much healthier when I cleaned it out in the fall. I'm convinced it's because the fabric lets air get to the roots and stops them from getting stuck in a circle. Has anyone else switched over and noticed a big change with a certain plant?

Ever try putting a regular plastic saucer underneath? I found that helps a ton with the drying out, it lets the bottom soak up a little extra water without staying soggy. I also started mixing in some coconut coir with my potting soil, it holds moisture way better.

I had the exact same problem ross.river, especially with my peppers last July. I put one of those big saucers under each bag and it helped some but not enough. What really fixed it for me was mixing in some of that water retaining gel you can buy at the garden center. I was skeptical at first but it made a huge difference keeping the soil damp on hot days. Fabric bags are great but you definitely have to change how you water compared to regular pots. Ive got three tomato plants in them right now and they are going crazy even in this dry spell we have been having.

Eh, mine just dried out way too fast in the sun.
