Just hit 14 tomatoes off one balcony cherry plant in Astoria and now I'm wondering if bigger pots are actually worth it
Back in May I put a single cherry tomato seedling in a 5 gallon bucket on my fire escape in Astoria, and by last week I had picked 14 ripe ones off it. My neighbor swears the secret is a 15 gallon fabric pot, says his plants triple my haul, but my bucket cost me $4 at the hardware store and his setup ran him like $40 with the soil. Half of me thinks I should size up next spring, the other half thinks the bucket is proof you don't need much room to get a real harvest. Is the bigger pot thing real or are we all just buying more dirt than we need?
