Just realized I was overwatering my balcony tomatoes for 3 months

I kept wondering why my Roma tomatoes were splitting and dropping flowers, and I thought it was just bad luck. Last Saturday I was on a video call with my mom (she grows everything in her backyard) and she saw my watering can and said wait how often are you watering those things? I told her every day and she just laughed and said those pots need drainage time and I was basically drowning them. Has anyone else made this mistake with container veggies?

Classic mistake that almost everyone makes with container plants at some point. Stick a wooden skewer or chopstick all the way down into the pot and if it comes out damp, skip the water for another day or two. Let those roots breathe and your tomatoes will start setting fruit again in no time.

Kill me, I did the exact same thing with my basil last summer. Thought I was being a good plant parent giving them a daily drink, turns out I was basically running a mosquito breeding operation in my own kitchen. The roots just sat there in soggy soil getting sad and mushy. My grandma saw a photo and said 'that basil looks like it drowned in a puddle' and I felt so called out. Now I stick my finger in the dirt like a weirdo before I even think about watering. Your tomatoes will bounce back, just let them dry out for a solid week and pretend they're on a desert vacation.
