My balcony cherry tomato plant gave me 87 fruits this month

I planted a single 'Sweet 100' vine in a big pot back in April, and I just counted 87 ripe tomatoes after my last harvest. I never expected one plant on my tiny Chicago balcony to produce that much, you know? Has anyone else had a single veggie plant go totally crazy like that?

I used to think you needed a big garden to get real production, but your "87 ripe tomatoes" completely changed my mind. I've been skeptical of container gardening for years, but seeing that kind of yield from one pot on a balcony is making me reconsider my whole setup. Your experience is seriously making me look at my own patio differently, though I know results can vary by location and luck.

Hold on, let me push back a bit here. I've tried container tomatoes for three years now and my BEST plant gave me maybe 20 tomatoes, and they were all smaller than what you'd get from a garden. Soil drying out, roots getting bound up, needing to water twice a day in July... it's a constant battle. Location absolutely matters, but so does the fact that a 5 gallon bucket just can't hold the root system a full grown tomato plant needs to really pump out fruit.
